Vic: Memorial to slain police too big, National Trust
The National Trust says a proposed memorial to Victoria's slain policemen and women
was massively overscaled and should be redesigned.
The Trust's Victorian chairman RANDALL BELL says the 18 metre by 3 metre memorial --
planned for Melbourne's St Kilda Road -- would dominate a nearby statue of war hero Sir
EDWARD `WEARY' DUNLOP.
The design features an amphitheatre facing an arched bluestone wall inscribed with
the names of 136 police officers killed in the line of duty since Victoria Police was
established.
Police Association secretary PAUL MULLETT says the design is a fitting tribute to officers
killed in the line of duty.
He says he hopes the matter will be resolved quickly so that the memorial can be completed
by Blue Ribbon Day -- the force's day of remembrance -- on September 29.
Victoria Police moved to establish the memorial following the 1998 murders of Sergeant
GARY SILK and Senior Constable RODNEY MILLER.
